Friday 15th February 1:05pm

Tony Jewell (75 yrs) is a Richmond premiership player, premiership coach and great Richmond club man.

He initially played in the VFA for Oakleigh and was placed 4th in the VFA Best & Fairest in 1963, before playing 80 games for Richmond as a rugged Back Pocket player. He was a premiership player in ’67 before retiring in 1970.

Tony then captain / coached VFA club Caulfield and coached them to their only premiership in 1973. He returned to Richmond in 1977 as reserves coach with immediate premiership success. At the end of ’78 he became the seniors coach. In his second year he coached Richmond to their 1980 premiership.

He then coached St Kilda in ’83-’84 and returned to Punt Road as seniors coach ’86-’87. In 1995 he returned to the club as Chairman of selectors and he later served on the board.

Richmond and Carlton are traditional long term rivals and the stoush at quarter time between coaches in the 1980 qualifying final was typical of the rivalry. It will be great to see the two coaches at the next Odd Friday Lunch.
