Silvio Foschini was born in 1963 in Melbourne to Italian parents. He played
soccer as a child but then played 107 games of VFL for The Swans & St. Kilda.

In 1981 at 17 he debuted for South Melbourne, the last year that the Swans were a
Melbourne based club. He kicked 37 goals that year and then 42 in his second year
in Sydney. In that year he refused to move to Sydney and was a fly-in payer.

He wanted to switch to St Kilda in 1983 but Sydney would not clear him. He took
the VFL to court in a high profile case arguing that VFL clearance rules breached
Restraint of Trade Laws. He won and triggered the abolition of the zoning system
in the VFL / AFL.

Silvio went on to play with St Kilda and in his first game he was joined by Sydney
teammate Paul Morwood, another uncleared player. Silvio played a further 69
games for St Kilda as a rover, over the following 6 years.

His son Matthew is a soccer player who played for Melbourne Victory and
represented Australia in under 23s. He now plays for South Melbourne.
