Ken Hunter (61 yrs) was born in Perth and played 99 games for Claremont before moving to Carlton in 1981. In his last 3 years at Claremont he was runner up each year in their Best & Fairest to Graham Moss, and in ’79 & ’80 gained All Australian status, and he also earned that status in ’82 & ’83. In his first year at Carlton he won its Best & Fairest award and a premiership as a half back flanker.
He was a very popular player known as courageous, determined, & exhilarating with high leaping ability. He had 3 broken jaws before joining Carlton, and won the 1983 Mark of the Year running back into a pack. He moved to play more on ball and in the forward line, and was Carlton’s leading goal-kicker in 1983.
He played 147 games for Carlton between 1981 & 1989 winning premierships in ’81, ’82 & ’87. ’87 was his 4th year as vice captain. Ken is in WA’s Team of the Century, Carlton’s Team of the Century and is in Carlton’s Hall of Fame.
He went on to serve on the board at Carlton from 1993 to 2006. Some time after his playing career he disclosed how he suffered with a bout of depression towards the end of his playing career and what brought it on.
